Our interview process

Because of the broad variety of roles we offer, we have two slightly different recruitment processes depending on what type of role you’re applying for.

Before your interview we recommend getting to know these processes so you know what to expect.

Front line colleagues

Our front line positions are roles which deal directly with our clients or help to administer our client services.

Our interview process for front line candidates lasts around three hours and consists of an initial telephone interview followed by an in-depth assessment centre.

Our telephone interview usually lasts around 20 minutes. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you and ask questions which will support your application.

It’s also a great opportunity for you to ask us any questions you may have about the role you’ve applied for.

An assessment centre usually lasts around 2.5 hours and involves taking part in a variety of activities that assess your suitability for the role.

We’ll observe a small group of candidates (usually no more than eight), during a group exercise. You’ll be given a topic to discuss, the subject for this may be practical or hypothetical.

It’s important to remain positive and enthusiastic throughout as we’ll be looking for persuasiveness, active listening and participation.

We’ll be looking at how people interact, negotiate, communicate and contribute to the group.

These come in a variety of forms and they help us assess your capability for a particular role. Aptitude tests are designed to assess a broad range of abilities, for example, numeracy, literacy or critical thinking. You’ll have to work through the exercises as quickly and as accurately as you can so read the instructions carefully.

The exercises are also designed to give you a taste of the type of work you might be doing if you’re successful in your application.

An interview usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour, and gives you the opportunity to tell us why you think you’re right for the role. It also gives us the opportunity to assess your skills and experience and decide if you’re the right person for us.

A typical interview will include:

  • A series of questions around your work history and CV
  • Competency based questions which focus on how you’ve applied your knowledge and experience in previous roles

Specialist roles

Specialist roles are those that are not directly client facing. These colleagues play an important part in supporting the charity's work.

Our interview process for specialist roles lasts around 1.5hrs and may consist of two parts, depending on the role you’ve applied for.

You may be asked to take part in a written test or presentation in which case you’ll receive a brief ahead of your interview. The test may last around 30 minutes.

In the written test you’ll need to demonstrate your skill level in one or more areas relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Alternatively, you may be asked to research a particular topic and complete a presentation instead.

You’ll have a face-to-face interview based around the skills we’re looking for in the role that you’ve applied for.

The interview usually lasts 45 minutes and it’s an opportunity to let us get to know you better, and for you to tell us why you think you’re right for the role. It also lets us see if you have the right skills for the job.

A typical interview will include:

  • A series of questions around your work history and CV
  • Competency based questions which focus on how you’ve applied your knowledge and experience in previous job roles
